HAPPY ONAM

Festivals are refreshing the society from the daytoday fatigue. We have lot of festivals in all over the world and in all phases of history. India is a country rich with festivals. Onam as a national festival of Kerala it refreshing the minds of all malayalees living all over the world. The concept behind onam is richness of the social life with wealth and richness of the mind with values. Eventhough we have a little in our hand, we should have a mentality of richness in mind. This is the inner meaning of the malayalam proverb 'Kanam vittum Onam unnanam'. Onam is a festival of gettogether as for as malayalees are concerned. All will gettogether in their native house and share happy. But there are a lot who cannot join with their family members in this onam. I am one of them and I am celebrating this onam with all malayalees who cannot join with their family. HAPPY ONAM.

WHAT IS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION?

It is the first subject in recent discussions is the sangh parivar and its attacking attitude towards artists. The cultural leaders and left intellectuals already placed a global movement by extending their support to MF Hussain and his followers. The motive of this group is to spread the message that, it is an attack by hindutwa wadees to a Muslim namely MF Hussain rather that an attack over the freedom of expression.

Freedom of expression is not a boundary less concept. An artist do not getting the freedom of expression by his birth but the society is giving that right to him. Therefore an artist cannot stand against the common feeling of the society. One is becoming an artist by his art and his social mind. But MF Hussain in an interview expressed that the artist in a man is dying when he became a social reformer. Why our social leaders are arguing for a man like Hussain? It is very clear that his work and words are against the common feeling of the society. He has depicted the relationship of Hanuman and Sita in an ugly manner, which is spreading a wrong message to the society. He has not taken the feeling of his Hindu brothers into consideration while executing his painting, which is portraying an oral sex image between Hanuman and Sita. Those who are criticizing the anti secular attack of Sangh Parivar is not saying anything about the anti secular art of Hussain.

On the evaluation of artistic history of Hussain any one can found that he is always targeting Hindu Gods and Goddess and sexualizing them through his paintings. He hearted the feeling of crores of Indians by his dress less portrait of Bharath matha.
What is the feeling behind this kind of art? This art what brings to our society? Violence is the only consequence by this. Firm action should be taken against who ever behind this kind of anti social expressions. If such an action is not coming from the governments and courts, who can blame the social violence caused by this art.

We cannot forget the global violence by Islamic organizations on the ground of a carton depict of Mohammad Nabi against a French newspaper some months ago. Interesting ting is that the same left intellectuals and cultural leaders, who are speaking for Hussain, including Arundhathi Roy, Nanditha Das and Pinarayivijayan, criticized the newspaper and the cartoonist. This time where is the theory of freedom of expression? The Government of India banned Mr. Gopal Godse’s play “I am Nathuram Vinayak Godse Speaking” some years ago. Why freedom of expression is prohibiting for Mr. Godse? Who ever criticizing the movement of Hindu organizations as anti secular is promoting the anti secular and sadist Islamic movement of Mr. Hussain.

All responsible political parties and organizations should try to minimize a problem in the society, not to allow them to burn. Unfortunately the Government of Kerala, under the leadership of CPI (M) is doing the second. Only on the basis of their ideological difference with Sangh Parivar, they have given the award in the name of Raja Ravivarma to MF Hussain during the burning circumstance, which is also going to heart the feelings of Hindus. Almost all Hindu families are worshiping in front of Ravivarma paintings, because he depicted the gods and goddess in such a way. Bhakthi, Beauty and sex all were the subject of Ravivarma Paintings, contributed moral values to the society. Now an award in his name is giving to an artist who is spreading immoral values to the society. That is why questions are coming from some sectors of the society. One cannot blame Sanghparivar or any other organizations for this.
